Damascus : Hidden Treasures of the Old City
Brigid Keenan, Tim Beddow (Photographer), Bridget Keenan
Damascus is the oldest continuously occupied city in the world. Hidden away in this ancient town is a treasure of domestic architecture unique in the world. The great houses of Damascus are fairytale palaces built in exotic styles that range from Roman and Mamluk to Ottoman Baroque. Behind the blank mud walls of the alleyways in the old town lie breathtaking interiors seldom visited by the outside world.

The Eyewitness Travel Guides are all excellent. The Istanbul guide is no exception. It has everything a traveller needs, and it is presented in an easy, slick, fun package. The maps are great and are cross-referenced to the site descriptions, there are wonderful descriptions of neighborhoods, a layout of the Bosporus boat trip, blueprint breakouts of famous sites such as the Blue Mosque, a fantastic chart of the Topkapi palace. Food hints, restauant guide, hotel tips, etc. In short, this is a great guide. It's also lightweight and easy to take along in your daypack.

Lonely Planet Andalucia
Susan Forsyth, John Noble
If you're traveling to Andalucia, Spain this is the book to take along. I reviewed Eyewitness Travel Guide (both Spain and Andalucia), Fodor, Frommer, Cordovon, and others. Lonely Planet has outstanding city maps and lots of them. It has built in "tabs" of the provinces, e..g. Cadiz, Sevilla, city guide maps with numbered legends on food, lodging and sights. The book is jam packed with useful information, things to buy, walking tours, practical information. The Lonely Planet guide has one two page color map, and some scattered color pictures, augmented with frequent and helpful black and white artwork. This book was recommended by a Spanish website.

Lonely Planet Cairo
Andrew Humphreys
During our recent trip to Egypt, we found this guide to be extremely helpful. Its information on lodgings, restaurants, and sights is unmatched by other guides. We found it had slightly more information than Lonely Planet Egypt, but we could easily have gotten by with the latter. It *is* nice to have the smaller volume to carry around in Cairo, though.

Lonely Planet Istanbul
Tom Brosnahan
This book was easy to use and effective when planning your trip. Good overview of the key places to see, thus easy to select the key things to do. The hotel lists allowed you to e-mail the hotels, get prices, and make your reservations, along with using Yahoo/Excite/Fodors sites/listings to get hotel info. Small size and inexpensive price make it 1st of a core set of books to have. Start with this one then get an expanded one for more details.
